Burberry Prorsum's A/W 2011-2012 womenswear collection was largely inspired by Jean Shrimpton, the 1960's proto-supermodel. While channeling the period's influence through the use of bright colours and understated silhouettes, Christopher Bailey focused almost entirely on winter outerwear. Tim Blanks  that 'It's become the style of the younger Bailey [...] to make his point with multiple variations on one theme. That trim coat ruled the show.' With coats at the collection's forefront, Bailey balanced the silhouette with beautifully cut trousers that created a wonderful elongated effect. 

One of the Burberry Prorsum's signature pieces, these flared trousers have been issued almost every season since A/W 2008. Their success lies in the directional silhouette produced by their ingenious cut: The upper is lean and form-fitting with a low rise. The leg remains narrow until it radically expands below the knees, resulting in a spectacular shape that elongates the body while creating a column-like silhouette. 

The soft and stretchy jersey fabric makes the trousers very comfortable and ideal for everyday wear. The trousers' detailing is inspired by men's military uniforms, with a sharp creased leg, quarter pockets on the front and buttoned welt pockets at the back. The narrow waistband features buttoned tabs with concealed elastic tape at the sides, that can adjust the width of the waist. The fly closes with a zipper and secures with a hook-and-bar closure and an interior anchor button. All seams feature double topstitching that suggests the military origins of the design, while the back is shaped by two vertical darts above each pocket. Like traditional men's tailoring, the hems are left unfinished to be tailored to the preference of the wearer. Finally, all buttons are made from genuine buffalo horn and are engraved with the Burberry Prorsum logo.
